Mariachi Vargas De Tecalitlan at Queen Elizabeth Theatre

Mariachi Vargas De Tecalitlan is one of Mexico’s longest-running folk groups. The band was first formed in 1897 by Gaspar Vargas. The mariachi group began its activities in the small city called Tecalitlán, south of Jalisco. From 1897 to 1930, Gaspar led the ensemble and recruited the band’s future leader, his son, and harpist, Silvestre Vargas. After Vargas’ retirement, the duties were passed on to Silvestre from 1931 to 1949. From 1950, the group was led by artistic director Rubén Fuentes for more than 60 years until his retirement in 2014. His successor, Carlos Martínez, now leads the much-beloved group. Due to the group’s remarkable longevity, the Mariachi Vargas De Tecalitlan is divided into five generations. The fifth-generation spans from 2003 to the current date.

From 1937 to 2009, Mariachi Vargas De Tecalitlan has released 50 recordings. The traditional Latin music varies from cumbia to Huastecos sones, to waltzes, to popurris, huapango, and many more. Their latest album, Y aquí estamos, was released in 2008. With more than 100 years behind them, Mariachi Vargas De Tecalitlan remains Mexico’s most celebrated folk band. The group currently consists of 14 members who play guitar, guitarron, violins, a harp, trumpets, and a vihuela.
