The Nutcracker is a classic two-act Russian ballet featuring the music of romantic composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. The story has been recreated countless times by prestigious ballet companies, including the New York City Ballet, the American Ballet Theater, Houston Ballet, and many more. The Nutcracker has also been adapted into live-action films, animation, TV, and even video games. The show’s popularity has made it into an annual tradition, which is why the Royal Winnipeg Ballet is proud to present the timeless story to the ballet-loving folks of Vancouver.
The Canadian production will be led by esteemed choreographers Galina Yordanova and Nina Menon. The show has also brought in industry experts Michael J. Whitfield for lighting, Paul Daigle for costume, and Brian Perchaluk for scenic design. The Nutcracker will run for two hours with an intermission in between. The Nutcracker has become a tradition in the Royal Winnipeg Ballet family. Last year, the company masterfully produced the show with rave reviews. Critic Holly Harris from the Winnipeg Free Press gave stellar feedback after witnessing the 2021 production. She wrote, “Nutcracker proved this ballet company is back in business for creating magic… the beaming, unmasked dancers were given a thunderous ovation by the mixed generation audience.”
For 50 years, the company has enriched the arts and cultural experiences of Canadians and foreign spectators with world-class productions, such as The Nutcracker. Founded in 1939, the company is steadfast in teaching, creating, and performing the art of dance. Due to their continuous excellence, they were the first to receive the royal title from the reigning Queen Elizabeth II.
