The upcoming Broadway production landing in Vancouver is a sung-through musical with music, lyrics, and book by the award-winning singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell. Upon its premiere, Hadestown amasses a whopping 14 Tony Awards nominations. It outstandingly won eight of them, including ‘Best Musical.’ The show made its debut on Broadway on April 17, 2019, and fans adored every bit of it. Critics specifically praised its direction and André De Shields’ acting. The New York Times called it “gorgeous” and “hypnotic” and said it was better than the New York Theatre Workshop version. The Hollywood Reporter’s David Rooney thought it was “utterly fabulous” and loved the performances.
The original version of the musical was first debuted in Vermont circa 2006. The all-new production that’s touring right now is similar, but undeniably more extravagant and more meaningful than the original. With Rachel Chavkin as the show’s director, Hadestown has turned into one of the most sought-after Broadway productions right now.
The musical is a retelling of a famous Greek myth about the star-crossed lovers Orpheus and Eurydice. The strong-willed young lady and the passionate singer-songwriter find themselves at a bypass where they go through the depths of the underworld. There are plenty of twists and turns in the plot, and we won’t get into the nitty-gritty details to keep the element of surprise. But what we can tell you is this: it’s both moving and heartbreaking.
“A journey to the underworld that feels like it sprung forth as something entirely new.” – Entertainment Weekly
“Feels lush, vigorous, and formally exciting!” – Vulture
“A new Broadway musical that takes audiences to hell and back!” – New York Stage Review
Mitchell’s folk-opera steers away from the original Greek tale though. In Hadestown, Eurydice chooses to go to the underworld. “The underworld is a place of wealth and security, in contrast to the above ground world where there’s freedom but it’s also unpredictable and the weather is unpredictable,” Mitchell explained. “And Eurydice makes a choice. She chooses the security of Hadestown, which comes with this kind of lifelessness. So she chooses kind of her gut. She chooses her stomach over her heart.”
She also admitted it was not an easy task to write a song that melts the heart of King Hades when talking about the show’s climax. “I just can’t tell you how many times I’ve rewritten it,” Mitchell said. “I mean, there’s just like sheets and sheets on the cutting room floor of the epics. It’s totally ridiculous. But I think that what we hit upon a couple productions ago that took some pressure off and made a lot of sense is that the gift that Orpheus brings to King Hades isn’t necessarily like the eloquence of his poetry. It’s actually that he has channeled this melody.”
No matter the process, Mitchell surely made a success out of this production. It opened with a bang on Broadway and the immersive two-act, 2½-hour musical drama brims with beauty and potential. If you have never seen Hadestown before, you can’t miss out on this chance! If you have seen the show, then you know that this show is worth going back to time and time again.
“Mitchell is a gifted tunesmith, and lyricist, who approaches musical theater with a clear, infectious sense of wonder.” – New York Stage Review
