Pretty Woman – the musical is the stage adaptation of the 1990 film of the same name. The story is based on the book by Gary Marshall, with a screenplay by J.F. Lawton. Pretty Woman – The Musical is a love story about Vivian, a sex worker, and Edward, a wealthy New York executive. Edward acquires Vivian’s service while he’s staying in Los Angeles. They get along pretty well despite their contrasting personalities. Apart from accompanying him privately, Edward also wants to bring Vivian to dinner with a lawyer and some associates. Thus, he teaches Vivian some dining etiquette and gives her some money to shop for clothes. However, her shopping trip didn’t go quite as planned after Vivian encountered a rude saleslady. Eventually, Vivian finds the perfect dress and goes to dinner with Edward.

What seems to be a fairytale dream come true for Vivian takes a turn when Edward’s lawyer discovers her true identity and makes an indecent proposal. What will happen when Edward and Vivian’s arrangement is over? Has Edward fallen in love? Pretty Woman’s theater adaptation pays homage to the favorite ‘90s film by inserting several iconic scenes, including Vivian’s shopping dilemma at a high-end store.

Pretty Woman opened on Broadway after a brief trial run in Chicago. The original Broadway production, featuring Samantha Barks as Vivian and Steve Kazee as Edward, received several nominations at the Broadway.com Audience Awards. Despite the musical’s mixed reviews, it still enjoyed substantial commercial success.

The musical uniquely features a contemporary score by award-winning songwriters Bryan Adams and Jim Vallance. After watching the musical, The Guardian’s Alex Soloski liked the score, describing it as “perfectly pleasant.” Meanwhile, Chicago Tribune’s Chris Jones finds the musical’s nostalgic vibe appealing. He mentioned, “Pretty Woman’ has found a smart, sweet spot somewhere between nostalgic retro romanticism and the current necessity for heroines to take charge.” Many critics praised the original Broadway production thanks to Samantha Barks’ exemplary performance. “Ms. Barks is clearly a talented singer and actress…she has been given no chance to banish stardust memories of the woman who created her part,” said Ben Brantley from the New York Times.
